While technology improvements are limiting growth in many secretarial and clerical fields, the specialized medical skills and terminology required of medical secretaries make this career a very viable job option.  Medical secretaries may work for private practices, in hospitals, government health agencies or for home health companies.

The daily duties and tasks will vary based on the employer, but they typically include:

  • Dictation transcription
  • Correspondence
  • Assisting physicians or scientists with medical research
  • Recording medical histories
  • Hospital coordination
  • Ordering medical supplies
  • Coordinating with insurance companies
  • Coordinating with medical labs

Obtaining a healthcare career, in a short period of time, is part of the reality of being a medical secretary.  Becoming a medical secretary can be rewarding in itself, or put you on a path to a solid medical career.
