The employment outlook for diesel mechanics is excellent and expected to keep pace with growth over the next eight years.  Mechanics who are proficient in computerized testing systems and repair will secure the best jobs.  An increased reliance on diesel engines to power vehicles will keep the job market secure.

Wages for diesel mechanics are good.  The median hourly pay rate is $16.53 with $10.66 per hour being the low end and $24.61 being the high end.  Diesel mechanics are often members of industry unions.

Advancement opportunities in diesel repair primarily take the form of increased wages, with experience and training.  Management opportunities also exist in the form of supervisory positions or service management.  Some experienced mechanics even open their own repair businesses.
