Desktop publishers use computers and layout software to design and create media like newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, books and magazines for printing.  Using computer software, desktop publishers may perform any or all of these functions:

  • Write or edit text
  • Scan and edit images or illustrations
  • Create page layouts
  • Typeset
  • Create digital versions of printed material
  • Color separations
  • Conversion of digital documents to film or other hard versions

Thanks to computers, desktop publishers work in a variety of industries.  Once confined exclusively to ad agencies, publishers and printing companies, desktop publishers work in the marketing departments of many medium to large sized companies.  Many desktop publishers also run their own businesses.

A career as a desktop publisher is a great outlet for creativity for computer savvy individuals.  A relatively short training period and great job opportunities make it a solid choice to study for.
