Because the amount of technical knowledge required in the home appliance repair industry, employers prefer to hire workers with formal training. This training may take the form of an apprenticeship, on the job training or technical training school. Students must become proficient in the use of both diagnostic tools like volt/ohmmeters and hand tools like screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools. Coursework includes electronics, schematic reading, plumbing, chemistry and refrigeration. Certificates or associates degrees can be earned in 12-month to 2-year programs.
The Environmental Protection Agency requires certification to work with or even purchase refrigerants. Some home appliance industry workers become union members as well. Voluntary certification is also available through the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians.
