A career in personal fitness training generally requires either training or certification.  Both training and certification will give you the skills and knowledge you need in order to become a successful personal fitness trainer.  Certification usually takes less than two years and speeds job placement.  Many career colleges offer classes in various areas of exercise such as personal training, weight training and aerobics.  However, some employers may seek fitness trainers with a bachelor's degree in either health and fitness or business administration.

Currently, employers are increasingly looking for personal fitness trainers with previous experience.  Many personal fitness trainers begin gaining experience through entry level positions.  They must have good instructional, communication, monitoring and motivational skills. Generally a good place to start is in gyms, spas and other fitness facilities working with personal fitness training managers in order to learn the skills they need.
