Teaching Schools - Education / Getting Started

All public school teachers must have at least a bachelors degree and have completed a teacher training program. Teachers are also required to be licensed. They may be licensed in the grades they plan to teach, from elementary to secondary grades. Many States require license applicants to be tested for competency in basic skills, including reading, writing and teaching. They are also required to show efficiency in their subject.

Special education teachers must also be licensed and obtain a general education credential that will allow them to teach elementary, middle and secondary schools. It is also required that special education teachers have a bachelors degree and complete an approved teacher preparation program. Communication is essential for all special education teachers. They need to be able to motivate students, understanding of each students special needs and easily accepting of others differences. These teachers must be patient and creative so they can apply different teaching methods to reach the students who may have difficulty learning.

Education and training requirements of postsecondary teachers varies depending on the subject taught and educational institution that will be employing them. Generally, teachers must have a bachelors degree or higher. It is also important that they have work or other experience in their specific field. A great way to gain teaching experience is through obtaining a position as a graduate teaching assistant. Some fields require teachers to be either licensed or certificated. Requirements for teachers working in four year universities are generally the highest. Four year colleges and universities generally require either a masters or doctoral degree.
