A bachelor's degree is a good way to get qualified to work as a counseling aide, rehabilitation aide or a social service worker.  However, a career in counseling often requires a master's degree.  A master's degree is also typically required in order for a person to be licensed or certified as a counselor.  Many positions also require some graduate course work.

Employers frequently provide training courses for recently hired counselors.  Other employers may provide tuition assistance if it is necessary for them to complete their graduate degree.  All counselors have to participate in graduate studies, workshops and personal studies to maintain the licenses and certificates acquired.

If you are interested in a career in counseling you should have a strong interest in helping and assisting others.  Counselors need to possess the ability to give and receive respect, trust and confidence.  Counselors should be able to work independently or as part of a team.  Workers in the counseling field must follow the code of ethics associated with their respective certifications and licenses.
