A great deal of technical knowledge is required to be an auto repair technician.  The fact that auto manufacturers vary assembly methods, materials and models so frequently makes learning a constant process.  It is possible to gain employment as an auto body tech without any schooling, since even educated workers go through several years of on the job training, but it's better to have had a solid educational background. 

Additionally, auto manufacturers and tool manufacturers offer continuing education to update the industry on changes. 

Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is one way to improve your skills and increase employability and salary range.
