To work as a dental hygienist, a State license is required.  Licensure is contingent upon graduation from an accredited dental hygiene school.  A variety of certificates and degrees are available in dental hygiene. 

Programs include course study in subjects like chemistry, physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, histology and periodontology.  Dental hygienists should also possess good manual dexterity because of precision work in patient's mouths.
