Education / Getting Started

It is possible to start a career as a diesel mechanic without formal training, but employers tend to want workers with classroom training particularly with the increased use of technology in the equipment.  Diesel mechanic training programs range from 6 months to 2 years, with the 2 year program leading to an associates degree.  Coursework consists of classroom training in basic physics, communications, logic and lab training in the latest diesel technology.

Diesel mechanics can further their education on the job with ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in diesel repair.
