Because the amount of technical knowledge required in the HVAC industry, employers prefer to hire workers with formal training.  This training may take the form of an apprenticeship, on the job training or technical training school.  Students must become proficient in the use of both diagnostic tools like volt/ohmmeters and hand tools like drills and acetylene torches.

Coursework includes electronics, blueprint reading, shop math, mechanical drawing, plumbing, chemistry and refrigeration.  Certificates or associates degrees can be earned in 6-month to 2-year programs.

The Environmental Protection Agency requires certification to work with or even purchase refrigerants.  Some HVAC industry workers become union members as well.
