Becoming an optometric assistant does not require any specialized form of training, though those that complete a formal program in optometric assisting are generally favored by employers over those that have not.
Most optometric assistant programs can be completed in just one year. These programs result in a diploma or a certificate. It is also possible to complete two years of training, which will result in a diploma. Coursework will include classes on optometric terminology, recordkeeping, transcription, and insurance processing. Coursework will also include medical law, patient relations, and laboratory techniques.
