Substance Abuse Counselor Schools

In order to be a substance abuse counselor, most states require a master’s degree.  Earning a bachelor’s degree makes it possible to get a position as an aide for a substance abuse counselor, but some states do allow individuals with a bachelor’s degree to work as a substance abuse counselor if they have the proper supporting coursework completed.

In addition to completing general courses in the field of counseling, a substance abuse counselor must also complete coursework that is specific to the area of substance abuse.  These courses include understanding drugs, their effects on people, and the underlying causes of abuse.  A substance abuse counselor must also engage in continuing education in order to maintain his or her license.
