According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for a substance abuse counselor is expected to be stronger than for other occupations. This is because more and more drug offenders are being sent to treatment programs instead of being put into jail. In addition, insurance companies are more frequently picking up the tab for hiring a substance abuse counselor, making it a more viable option for those battling addiction.
The Bureau reports that the median annual salary for a substance abuse counselor in 2004 was $31,130. Those within the highest 10% earned more than $49,600 that same year.
