An ultrasound technician is responsible for using diagnostic imaging in order to help a physician diagnose ailments or monitor the development of a fetus.  Unlike other forms of diagnostic imaging, such as xrays, the ultrasound technician use an sonograph to create these images.  The sonograph utilizes sound waves rather than radiation to create the image.

In order to create the diagnostic image, the ultrasound technician aims the sound waves toward the area of the patient’s body that is in need of treatment.  The sonograph then collects the echoes that are reflected back in order to create an image.  The ultrasound technician can then videotape, photograph, or otherwise transmit these images so the physician can use them in order to make a diagnosis.

Before beginning the imaging process, the ultrasound technician first explains the procedure to the patient and takes a medical history.  The ultrasound technician must then select the appropriate equipment for taking the images and move the patient into the necessary position.  The ultrasound technician must also determine whether or not the images are good enough for the physician to make a diagnosis before completing the imaging session.
