A veterinary technician is responsible for carrying out many of the same duties that a nurse would do for a physician.  These duties include performing medical tests, diagnosing medical conditions, and treating medical conditions while under the supervision of the veterinarian.  In order to perform these duties, a veterinary technician may perform a number of laboratory tests, assist the veterinarian with dental prophylaxis, take blood samples, prepare tissue samples, and prepare medical equipment.

A veterinary technician may also perform administrative duties, such as obtain patient records and keep them up to date.  In addition, the veterinary technician may develop xrays and provide specialized care to the animal patients.  The types of animals the veterinary technician works with will depend upon the veterinarian’s practice.  Small-animal veterinarians generally deal with companion pets such as dogs and cats, while others specialize in larger animals.

A veterinary technician may also work in a research facility.  In this capacity, the veterinary technician may administer medications, prepare samples, record animal information, and watch for signs of distress or pain.
