If you hope to become an auto mechanic, you will need to complete postsecondary training.  This training can be completed at either a vocational school or at a community college.  In addition, it is beneficial to earn certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.  Coursework involved in earning an auto mechanic degree includes classes in chemistry, physics, English, electronics, mathematics, and computers.

In some cases, it is possible to obtain a job in the field even if you do not have postsecondary training.  Without formal training, however, you will find it far more difficult to find employment and you likely will not earn the same wage as someone that has completed the necessary training.  Therefore, the two to five years it takes to earn an auto mechanic degree is well worth the time spent.
