In order to become a beautician, you must first earn licensure in your state.  In order to earn the necessary licensure, you must complete formal training or education.  In some states, earning a GED or high school diploma is enough to become employed as a beautician.  Most states, however, require completing a program with a school that is licensed.

The exact requirements for acquiring a license as a beautician vary from state to state.  Regardless of the required coursework, each state also requires taking an examination in order to prove knowledge in the area.  The exam includes taking a written test and often includes taking an oral examination or demonstrating your skills as a beautician.
