If you wish to become a car mechanic, you will need to complete a two year certificate or associate degree program.  While enrolled in the program, you will participate in traditional classroom discussions as well as in hands-on learning experiences.  If you choose to earn an associate degree, you will need to take classes in mathematics and English as well as in automotive repair.  If you enter a vocational program, on the other hand, your studies will likely focus more on the hands-on experiences.

Many car mechanics also choose to obtain special certifications.  Although this is not mandatory, obtaining certification in areas such as engine repair, electrical systems, suspension, and brake systems is helpful when it comes to obtaining employment.
