The number of employment opportunities available for car mechanics are expected to grow at a faster than average rate over the next several years.  The median hourly wage for car mechanics in May 2006 was $16.24.  The lowest 10% of earners made less than $9.17 per hour while the highest 10% earned over $27.22. 

Those working in the local government sector earned the most, with a median hourly wage of $19.07.  Those working in automotive stores, on the other hand, earned the least with a median hourly wage of $14.38.
