Many finish carpenters learn their trade by participating in an apprenticeship program.  When getting their education through an apprenticeship, they may receive classroom instruction as well as hands-on experiences through on-the-job training opportunities.  In this setup, apprentices start off by taking on simple tasks and then increasingly take on more difficult assignments. 

There are, however, formal classes that finish carpenters can take in order to learn their trade.  In addition, advancement opportunities are more available to those finish carpenters that learn extra skills, such as learning how to speak Spanish, so they can more effectively assist their customers.
