Every day in America, thousands of cars and trucks are physically damaged through weather, car accidents or acts of vandalism.  While some damage may cost more to repair than the car is worth, known as a total loss, or totaled, many autos are repaired to look as good as new.

Auto body techs are the workers who perform this important task.  Many cars are made with different materials - metal, fiberglass and composite plastic.  Auto body techs remove dents, straighten frames, replace damaged panels and repair or replace other damaged external parts.

Special equipment and tools are used in the auto body repair industry.  Like most industries, computers and computerized equipment are being used more often.  Auto body technicians in smaller shops, or those who are self-employed may also perform painting as well.  Auto body repair has created a lot of specialists, with painters, frame straighteners and panel repairers focusing solely on that aspect of the work.

Working in the automotive repair industry as a repair tech is almost a recession proof career.  If you like working with cars and light trucks, this could be a rewarding job.
