There are many subsets of careers in the sound category for TV and film production including:  audio / video equipment technician, broadcast technicians and sound engineering technicians.  For the purposes of this article, we are only going to discuss the last one:  sound engineering.

Sound engineers operate equipment like mixers and computer based recording software to record, mix, and edit music, voices or special effects for a variety of commercial and entertainment purposes.  Sound engineers work in Hollywood movie and TV studios, sporting arenas, music recording studios, theaters and anywhere performances are being made.

While a great deal of the work involves the proper setup of recording equipment, the other huge portion of the job relies on editing after the recording.  Sound engineers rely almost entirely on computer based programs to perform editing.

Sound engineering technicians are some of the highest paid employees in their field.  Talent, technical knowledge and software mastery can lead to an interesting and rewarding career.
