Diesel Mechanic Job Description

Article by Max Stein
Enter your zip code:

Diesel mechanics repair and maintain vehicles powered by diesel engines like heavy trucks, buses, locomotives, some construction equipment and farm tractors.  A diesel mechanic may work for an independent repair shop, a government agency that maintains such fleets, the railroad or a trucking line.

Diesel mechanics use hand tools and computerized diagnostic equipment to perform tests and repair diesel engines and vehicles.  Because of the equipment involved in the repairs, most mechanics work in a shop, however, some are mobile and may be called out to repair a vehicle on location.  Diesel mechanics are expected to provide their own hand tools like wrenches, screwdrivers and such, while the employer will typically provide larger equipment and tools.
