Machinists create parts, or the tools to make parts, out of metal.  In the past, machine tools; milling machines, lathes and grinders, were used by hand to create machined parts.  Now, high tech machines, called CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machines, produce many of the parts and tools.  Machinists read blueprints and operate the software to create the finished product.  Some parts are produced in the hundreds, while others are completely custom jobs; numbering only one or two.

Machinists tend to work in the automotive, aerospace and aeronautical industries producing anything from engine parts to custom wheels and the custom tools to make these products.  Machine shops are typically smaller businesses because of the custom nature of their work.

A career as a machinist offers a hands on, high tech job with advancement opportunity and great pay.  With four year college degrees not guaranteeing employment anymore, becoming a machinist can be rewarding and lucrative.
