Multimedia design builds on the skills and abilities needed to be a graphic designer. It combines graphic design with animation to create computer based movies and presentations. As technology advances and equipment prices come down, we will see even more amazing multimedia fusion with more realistic and life-like results.
Multimedia designers are employed primarily in film and TV industries, advertising, web/computer marketing firms and self-employed. Their duties and daily activities vary depending on the industry.
Some general duties may include:
- Creating digital images for the purpose of animation
- Transferring audio/video files to be edited and manipulated digitally
- Creating artwork to be used in video games
- Creating animated sequences using computer software
One of the key abilities of a multimedia designer is superior knowledge of the equipment or software needed to perform their job. Some of the most common software includes Macromedia Flash, Director and Fireworks and Adobe Image Ready. Multimedia designers may also need to know audio/video editing equipment and software.
A career in multimedia design, while competitive, can be very rewarding financially and creatively. One half of multimedia designers own their own business.
