Home appliance repair technicians repair and sometimes, install consumer appliances in customer's homes.  Such appliances include refrigerators, stoves/ovens, washers and dryers.  Some appliance repair techs work on smaller household appliances like microwave ovens or air conditioning units that are more portable.

Repair technicians typically use small hand tools like hammers and screwdrivers to open appliance cases to determine the proper course of repair.  They may also use electronic test equipment like volt/ohmmeters to determine the cause of a problem.  Home appliances are increasingly complex with electronic components and features that did not exist on previous models, even a few years ago.  The end result is home appliance repair technicians must have proper technical training to even do their job.  Repair technicians who work on refrigerators and air conditioners must also follow legislated guidelines for handling and recycling CFC and HCFC refrigerants.

Home appliance technicians may work for retail outlets that sell new equipment, or equipment manufacturers.  They may also work for independent repair shops.  Some experienced appliance technicians even start their own businesses.

A career as an appliance repair technician is a great choice for someone with mechanical aptitude who wants to earn a good income in a profession that has strong growth possibilities.
