Occupational therapist assistants work under the direct supervision of occupational therapists to provide physical rehabilitation to injured or diseased patients.  The goal of occupational therapy is to teach people how to perform day to day functions.  Another goal is to teach injured people how to compensate for injuries and return to work.  Occupational therapists may work with people who have been injured on the job.  They may also work with people who are developmentally disabled; both physically or mentally.

Occupational assistants administer treatment plans for patients created by occupational therapists.  They document the progress of the plan and make adjustments if necessary.    Occupational therapist assistants document treatment for billing purposes.  Therapist assistants need to be strong, as they may have to lift patients.  Positions for therapist assistants exist in hospitals, private practices, nursing care facilities, home health and other medical offices.

A career as an occupational therapist assistant is a great choice for someone who likes working with patients and has a desire to help disabled people.  Without further education, the advancement path is limited, but the financial compensation is excellent.
