Surgical technologists assist doctors and nurses during surgical procedures. They primarily work for hospitals, but may also work for physicians who perform minor surgeries, or in outpatient care centers.
Surgical technologists perform most of the support work for an operating room. They prepare the room for surgery; including stocking supplies and tools and ensuring sanitary operating conditions. Surgery techs also prepare the patient by washing and shaving the proper areas and transporting and placing the patient in the operating room.
Surgical technologists are also called scrubs or operating room technicians. They assist other medical personnel during the procedure by helping staff put on gowns and gloves. They may also hold and pass surgical tools during the procedure.
After the surgery, the technician may transport the patient to recovery areas and be responsible for operating room clean up and restocking.
A career as a surgical technologist is a great way to get into the healthcare field. It offers a great employment outlook, financial compensation and a gateway to a number of other medical jobs.
