The employment outlook for auto body techs is expected to expand at the same pace as the rest of employment growth. Training and experience are important components of finding a job in auto body repair. While there are many auto body repairers who are self-employed, the amount of capital equipment, tools and job experience are cost and intellectually prohibitive to novice technicians.
Wages for auto repair techs are good. The median hourly pay rate is $15.71 per hour and the high and low range of the scale is $11.64 at the low end and $20.94 at the high end.
Advancement in this career can include promotion to tech management. Some experienced technicians choose to go into business for themselves, while others go to work for insurance companies as damage appraisers.
